Nearly seven hours later, due to choppy waters and driving rain, they disembarked their private boat and Miles proceeded to hire a traveling coach that would take them into Paris. Once they struck a fair price, he gave over the address to their driver, and they were treated like royalty. Apparently, the duke’s residence on the Rue de Rivoli was in the height of the fashionable corridor of Paris. Many royals the world over had apartments in various buildings there, and according to their driver, the views of both the Palais Bourbon as well as Place de la Concorde were spectacular, especially at sunset.

By the time they’d gained La Ville Lumière—the City of Light—it was early evening and well past tea time.

Miles stifled a yawn as he alighted from the coach, and when he glanced at his wife, she had gloved fingers over her mouth, hiding her own expression of exhaustion. Footmen exited the house and began unloading various trunks and baggage. “One day, perhaps, people with more intelligence than us will invent a way to traverse between countries in a more efficient manner.” He grasped her hand and assisted her down. “Imagine taking half the travel time to reach a destination.”

“Would that such a thing occurs in our lifetime.” She smiled at him with tired eyes.

“Perhaps not ours, but I have every hope for Jane’s.” He thanked the driver and threw him a small leather purse of coins. “Many thanks for the journey, my good man. Should you wish to reap another such windfall, meet us here in a fortnight for a return trip.” He also handed over his card. “Good evening.”

“Merci, mon seigneur.” The thin driver tucked the offerings away. “It would be an honor to escort you again.” He touched the brim of his felt hat. “Until then. Bonsoir.”

A middle-aged man in elegant livery stood at the open front door. He slightly inclined his head. His dark hair, severely parted down the middle of his head, gleamed in the gaslights just being lit on the streets. “I am Henri, the butler.” He showed them into a long entry hall lined with watercolor paintings in gilt frames. “The Viscount Trewellain is in residence. He suggested I was to expect the Earl of Archewyne and his wife.” The man looked Miles up and down, his hawkish nose leading the way. “I assume you are that man?”

Tamping the urge to chuckle lest the butler think he made light of the conversation, Miles nodded. “I am the earl. This is my wife, Lady Emmaline.” He drew her forward. “The Duke of Rathesborne extended an invitation to stay for the length of our visit.”

“Very good, my lord.” Henri didn’t betray any sort of emotion, so whether he cared or not was anyone’s guess. “If you will follow me? I will show you to your rooms.” His French-accented English was impeccable. But then, Miles would expect nothing less from a servant in the duke’s employ.

They trailed after him through the entry hall, down
